Until recently, researchers have experienced difficulty in visualizing the itch-sensing neurons in the skin that are responsible for the itching sensation of those who suffer from chronic itch. However, a team of Georgia Tech researchers from the School of Biological Sciences has combined different cutting-edge techniques to solve this problem. The researchers include Yanyan Xing, Liang Han, Haley R. Steele, Yuyan Zhu, Katy Lawson, and Taylor Niehoff. Stress Management Workshop | 2021-01-15T00:00:00-05:00
Adam J. Decker, a senior academic professional in the School of Biological Sciences, has recevied a 2020 Georgia Power Professor of Excellence Award. The Covid-19 Event Risk Assessment Planning Tool developed by professor Joshua Weitz and other Georgia Tech researchers continues to generate coverage worldwide. It is the subject of this BBC News television story. It is also mentioned in this Nature item, which includes other sites and apps that help communicate the risk of Covid-19 to the public.  Covid: Online tool calculates risk at gatherings | 2020-12-18T00:00:00-05:00
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, two human factors are battling it out: awareness of the virus’s severe consequences, and fatigue from nine months of pandemic precautions. The results of that battle can be seen in the oddly shaped case, hospitalization, and fatality-count graphs, says a new study co-authored by Georgia Tech Covid-19 researcher Joshua Weitz. Coverage of the new study also appeared in Futurity.  FITRE | 2020-12-08T00:00:00-05:00
One of those articles is by Jennifer Leavey, principal academic professional with the School of Biological Sciences, director of the Georgia Tech Urban Honey Bee Project, and faculty director of the EXPLORE Living Learning Community. This blog for education professionals links to her Dec. 1 guest editorial in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (subscription required) describing how she was pleasantly surprised by her students regarding how they felt about remote learning.  Georgia Tech Office of International Development | 2020-12-01T00:00:00-05:00
Simon Sponberg is back to experimenting with some of his favorite subjects: Hawkmoths. The School of Physics and School of Biological Sciences assistant professor, who studies the neuromechanics of animal movement, has tethered the large moths to video game joysticks in earlier studies to find out how the insects track targets. Now he's gathering data about just how fast the moths decide on which muscles to use as they hover near flowers. Sponberg's latest study also attracted the attention of The Scientist. reconfigurable transceivers | 2019-12-30T00:00:00-05:00
Many things about the animal world fascinate David Hu. He's won awards and gained attention for his studies on everything from mammal urination and defecation, to this research involving fire ants and how they build rafts out of their bodies when floodwaters rise. Hu, an associate professor in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Physics, and his team found different fluid behaviors, such as vortexes, could change the size of the fire ant raft in several ways. Hu and members of his team presented at the American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics 72nd Annual Meeting in late November. trauma recall | 2019-12-20T00:00:00-05:00
That "new Smyrna councilman" is also known as Lewis Wheaton, associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences. Wheaton, who has run the Cognitive Motor Control Lab since he arrived at Georgia Tech in 2008,  was elected Nov. 5th to Smyrna's Ward 7 with 57 percent of the vote.
