Three researchers from the School of Biological Sciences and the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering have published research that identified a large number of genes and gene sets that were potentially useful as transcript-level biomarkers for predicting drug-specific patient survival outcomes. The findings suggest that the drug-specific survival marker genes they found warrant further investigation for insights into drug mechanisms, and for validation as biomarkers to aid cancer therapy decisions. The researchers are Bridget Neary, Jie Zhou, and Peng Qiu.  sex discrimination | 2021-03-02T00:00:00-05:00
The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design shows up in the Saporta Report's three-part series, The Regenerative Economy, on how eco-friendly government policies regarding construction are working in Georgia. The Kendeda is the location of College of Sciences-led projects on the impact of a "living building" on the nearby ecosystem, and on monitoring how the building is managing and using its resources. maritime | 2021-02-22T00:00:00-05:00
Sam Brown, professor in the School of Biological Sciences, is one of 65 new fellows elected to the American Academy of Microbiology's class of 2021. "I’m thrilled to join the American Academy of Microbiology," Brown says. "I want to offer a huge thanks to my lab, past and present, and colleagues around the world who made this recognition possible, and who make science so much fun. Looking forward, I’m excited to continue building microbiology research on campus, through our Center for Microbial Dynamics and Infection (CMDI)."Information on one of Brown's recent research studies can be found here.  Sam Brown Elected to American Academy of Microbiology | 2021-02-19T00:00:00-05:00
Here are two items that relate to David Hu's previous Georgia Tech research on the ability of fire ants to form rafts made of, well, fire ants in order to stay afloat and alive during floods. Hu, an adjunct professor in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Physics, who is also a professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, took closeup photographs of the fire ants in his lab experiments with graduate student Nathan J. Mlot. Meanwhile, in the Overhead at the National Geographic podcast, photographer Anand Varma describes shooting Hu's fire ants during a separate visit to Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech scientists are working with the CDC to see if Covid-19 tests need to be modified as more virus mutations pop up around the world. Greg Gibson, professor in the School of Biological Sciences who helped set up Georgia Tech's initial testing program, tells 11 Alive News that if COVID-19 vaccines and tests have to be tweaked, it will be relatively easy to do so. Joshua Weitz, professor in the School of Biological Sciences, comments on the difficulties in connecting human behavior and disease transmission, and how those challenges must be resolved in order to better control future pandemics. Weitz led researchers in developing the Covid-19 Event Risk Assessment Tool.  subglacial hydrologic system | 2021-01-28T00:00:00-05:00
WorkCare, an occupational health services company helping employers with their employees' healthcare needs, provides resources on tracking Covid-19 risk. One of those is the Covid-19 Event Risk Assessment Tool, developed by Joshua Weitz and his research team at Georgia Tech. Weitz is a professor in the School of Biological Sciences, and director of the Interdisciplinary PhD in Quantitative Biosciences.  eccv | 2021-01-21T00:00:00-05:00
Greg Gibson, professor in the School of Biological Sciences, talks about coordinating effective Covid-19 testing strategies in this episode of the Biotech Podcast. Gibson is also Director of the Center for Integrative Genomics, and the Genome Analysis core of the Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB). He is on a Georgia Tech task force exploring solutions for returning staff and students to work.  Chance Brown | 2021-01-21T00:00:00-05:00
Joseph Mazur, who writes the Speed of Life blog at Psychology Today, examines the psychology and behaviors behind those who continue to risk Covid-19 infection at large gatherings. Mazur cites Georgia Tech's Covid-19 Event Risk Assessment Tool, developed by School of Biological Sciences professor Joshua Weitz and his team.  aditya anupan | 2021-01-21T00:00:00-05:00
Joshua Weitz, professor in the School of Biological Sciences, says he has "substantial evidence" that the Covid-19 Event Risk Assessment Planning Tool he and his team developed at Georgia Tech has been mostly used by members of the public since July 2019.  Kausik Chakrabarti | 2021-01-18T00:00:00-05:00
